2024- 5 Frame Nucs and Queens
We’re entering our 7th season of making “OUR” bees available to our customers. I’ve worked very hard for the last 7 years improving the genetics we not only offer to our customers, but run throughout our operation.
We continually improve our genetics every season by selecting the best of the best donor colonies within our operation. We test colonies for 5 separate characteristics:, and graft the next generation of queens from the highest ranking hives. The first and most important is the proven ability to over winter in our northern climate with minimal input from the beekeeper. The 2nd trait we check for is early spring build up. The 3rd is hygienic behavior, and we test this using the liquid nitrogen method to give us an exact number to compare. We also grade on honey production as well as medium temperament. We are very proud of the improvement we have bred into our operation and the positive direction it continues to head.
We will be offering 2 varieties of nucs in the spring of 2022. We will be making up nucs during the months of March and April in our Southern Operation located in Hampstead North Carolina. These “Southern Nucs” are made from bees selected with our proven genetics and traits, but allowed to mate in NC. We will also continue to make our “Northern Nucs” in our Northern location in Cobleskill New York.
Our bees pass 5 separate health inspections annually. The first inspection of the season takes place in April in North Carolina by the state inspector, and certifies that our bees meet the requirements to be sold and transported in that state. Our 2nd inspection takes place in May in New York by the state inspector, and again certifies that our bees meet the requirements to be sold and transported within NY. We volunteer our bees for 2 National inspections during the spring and late summer months. The inspections give us information about our wax, virus and spore loads, and other issues that may need to be addressed. Our 5th inspection of the season is done by the NY state inspector in the month of October. This inspection insures our bees are healthy, and meet the requirements to cross state lines and be taken to our southern operation for the winter.
Our 2022 southern nucs should be available for pick up early to mid May. Our 2022 Northern nucs should be available for pick up by early to mid June. Mother Nature sets the schedule as to when we can start rearing quality queens here in the north. We’ve found it’s best if we follow her lead. We will contact you individually via phone call once pick up dates are confirmed.
